Peace of mind for you and the people you love

Final expense insurance, sometimes called burial insurance, is usually a smaller whole life policy designed to pay for a funeral, burial or cremation, and other final bills, so your loved ones are not left with the expense.

These policies often have simplified applications, with health questions instead of a medical exam. Coverage amounts are smaller than a typical family policy, which keeps premiums more manageable for many people later in life.

  • Smaller coverage amounts focused on final costs
  • Simplified health questions on many policies
  • Coverage designed to last for life
  • Benefit paid to the person you choose

How it works

How final expense insurance works

You choose a coverage amount, often enough to cover a funeral and related costs, and pay a level premium. Because most final expense policies are whole life, coverage is designed to last as long as premiums are paid. When you pass away, your beneficiary receives the benefit and can use it for the funeral, outstanding medical bills, or anything else.

Some simplified or guaranteed-acceptance policies have a waiting period, often two years, before the full death benefit is paid for non-accidental causes. Jay will explain any waiting period and limits before you apply.

Planning ahead

Why plan for final expenses now

Funeral and burial costs can add up quickly, and families often have to pay them within days, before an estate is settled. A dedicated policy gives your family money for those costs right away, and lets you decide in advance what you want.

Final expense coverage also works alongside a home plan. If you own your home free and clear and want to pass it to your children, a final expense policy can help cover costs so they are not pressured to sell the house quickly.

What does final expense insurance cover?

The benefit is paid to your beneficiary, who can use it for funeral, burial or cremation costs, medical bills, debts or any other expense.

Do I need a medical exam for final expense insurance?

Many final expense policies use a short health questionnaire instead of an exam. Approval and pricing still depend on your answers and the carrier’s underwriting.

Is there a waiting period?

Some simplified or guaranteed-acceptance policies have a graded benefit or waiting period, often two years, for deaths not caused by an accident. Jay will tell you if a policy has one.

How much final expense coverage do I need?

Many people choose enough to cover a funeral plus a cushion for final bills. Think about the type of service you want and any debts you want handled, then talk it through with Jay.
