Coverage that lasts as long as your biggest responsibilities
Term life insurance covers you for a fixed period, often 10, 20 or 30 years. If you pass away during the term, your beneficiaries receive the death benefit. If you outlive the term, the coverage ends.
Because it has no cash value, term life is usually the most affordable way to buy a large amount of coverage, which is why it is the first choice for many young families and new homeowners.
- Level premiums for the length of the term on most policies
- Match the term to your mortgage or your youngest child’s age
- Many policies can be converted to permanent coverage (rules vary)

How it works
How term life insurance works
You choose a coverage amount (the death benefit) and a term length. You pay a premium, usually monthly or yearly. On a level term policy, the premium is designed to stay the same for the whole term. If you pass away while the policy is in force, the carrier pays your beneficiaries.
When the term ends, coverage stops. Some policies let you renew year to year at a much higher price, and many let you convert part or all of the coverage to a permanent policy without new medical questions, within a set window. Conversion rules differ by carrier and policy, so Jay will show you the exact terms before you apply.

Choosing your term
How to pick the right term length
A simple way to choose: match the term to the longest big responsibility you need to cover. If you just bought a home with a 30-year loan, a 30-year term can protect the mortgage for its full life. If your youngest child is 3, a 20-year term can carry them through college age.
Some families “ladder” two policies, for example a 30-year policy for the mortgage and a 20-year policy for income replacement while the kids are home, so coverage steps down as needs shrink.

Questions
Frequently asked questions

What happens when my term life policy ends?
Coverage stops and no benefit is paid if you outlive the term. Depending on the policy, you may be able to renew at a higher price or convert to permanent coverage within the conversion period.
Can I convert term life insurance to whole life?
Many term policies include a conversion option that lets you switch to a permanent policy without a new medical exam, within a set time and up to the original amount. The rules vary by carrier and policy.
How long should my term be?
Match it to your longest major obligation, such as the years left on your mortgage or until your youngest child is independent. Jay can help you compare 10, 20 and 30-year options.
Does term life insurance build cash value?
No. Term life is pure protection, which is why it usually costs less than permanent coverage for the same death benefit.
