Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to buy a first home?
Many buyers spend a few months getting ready and shopping. Once an offer is accepted, a typical escrow in California runs about 30 days, sometimes longer.
How much do I need for a down payment?
Some loan programs allow low down payments, and assistance programs may help. A lender can explain options for your situation. Also plan for closing costs and reserves.
Do I need an agent to buy my first home?
You are not required to have one, but an agent helps with pricing, offers, disclosures and deadlines. Buyers now sign a written agreement with their agent that spells out compensation, which is negotiable.
Is my checklist private?
Yes. It is saved only in your browser on this device unless you share the link.
